Il Casting Society Artios Award premia il miglior casting nei film, in televisione e nel teatro dell’anno. Le celebrazioni si sono svolte di persona per la prima volta in tre anni, tenendosi a Los Angeles e a New York City con i conduttori Niecy Nash-Betts e il comico Alex Edelman che si sono divisi i compiti di presentatori tra le due città. C’è stata anche una cerimonia per i casting director a Londra.
Con il nuovo premio aggiunto per il casting agli Oscar, la serata è stata sicuramente una festa. A partire dal 2026, ci sarà un premio per il miglior risultato nel casting, il culmine di una campagna per il riconoscimento che dura da decenni.
Ava DuVernay è stata la destinataria del Premio Lynn Stalmaster per la carriera. Mentre riceveva il suo premio, DuVernay ha dedicato del tempo per ringraziare i governatori dell’Academy che hanno sostenuto questa nuova categoria degli Oscar: “Per me e i colleghi registi, la risposta è stata facile. Questo dovrebbe accadere. Deve accadere, e abbiamo parlato ad alta voce affinché i casting director ottenessero questo risultato”.
Ha poi usato il resto del suo discorso per onorare Aisha Coley, l’unica casting director con cui ha mai lavorato. “La mia passione per gli Oscar che riconoscono il casting è la stessa passione che mi ha spinto a sentirmi così riguardo a questo premio che ho tra le mani. Quella passione è di ammirazione e rispetto per una donna”, ha detto DuVernay, riferendosi a Coley.
Dopo aver descritto le loro collaborazioni su diversi film, DuVernay ha ricordato di aver lavorato con Coley su Origin. Ha detto a Coley che voleva solo attori paria – anche conosciuti come intoccabili durante la storia – per interpretare i paria nel film.
“Mi ha detto, ‘Va bene. Mi metto subito al lavoro. Dove posso trovare attori paria?’ … La SAG non ha attori paria registrati perché i paria sono relegati alla casta più bassa, e non recitano. E così, è dovuta andare in India. Ha dovuto cercare nella diaspora indiana e trovare che ogni singola persona in quel film che interpreta un paria è un paria. In qualche modo, lei ha fatto accadere tutto ciò.”
